Nagai Lab at the University of Electro-Communications / Learning Robot DiGORO
At the International Robot Exhibition 2009, the Nagai Lab at the University of Electro-Communications presented the “Learning Robot DiGORO.” If a person shows the robot how to do something several times, such as picking up and putting down a bottle or bucket, the robot learns the new action by itself. Even with an unknown object, this technology can predict and recognize the category to which the object belongs.
DiGORO can also remember people’s faces and voices simultaneously, by identifying the patterns of parts of the face, and recognizing their colors and shapes.
Based on the information it remembers, DiGORO can take action autonomously. This has made it popular as a household robot in Japan and elsewhere.
Also, DiGORO can generate maps and estimate its own position, so it doesn’t get lost, even in places it hasn’t been before. The robot’s means of transportation is based on the Segway.
The Nagai Lab aims to develop autonomous robots that can handle tasks even more freely, deciding what to do by themselves.
