In Sri Lanka, elephants are losing their habitats due to environmental destruction of the jungles and as a result are having a high incidence of problems with humans. Because of these problems, there are many young elephants who have lost their parents due to poaching or such.
These elephants are protected in an elephant orphanage located in the village of Kegalla. In cooperation with an environmental NGO in Sri Lanka, Michi Corporation has developed a 100% handmade paper from recycled elephant dung from the elephants in the orphanage.
The paper is called "Elephant Dung Paper". Michi Corporation is currently exporting the product primarily to aquariums and zoos in eleven nations. Next, the company plans to expand product sales through general retail bookstores.
