As One Corporation exhibited the As One Cell Picking System, which accurately collects individual cells from assemblages of tens of thousands to millions of cells.
A plastic plate called a “nano chamber slide” contains holes the same size as the target cells. When a cell solution is sprinkled on the plate, cells enter the holes automatically. The plate is for use with animal cells, and a single plate has 30,000 holes.
As cells enter individual holes, the cell assemblage becomes a regular array on the plate, where the machine detects fluorescence.
In this way, the machine can collect a single cell in approximately 30 seconds. It can handle yeast or animal cells, and a unique feature of this system is that it can also collect cell clusters. As the current version is a prototype, a commercially available model is scheduled to debut in fall or winter 2009.
