As a way to combat global warming, Valore Corporation suggests using moss to bring greenery to rooftops.
Because mosses absorb moisture from the air on their surfaces, they can store up to eight times their own weight in water. This stored water evaporates, changing solar heat into cool air. So mosses are expected to cool down not just outdoor locations, but interiors as well, reducing the energy needed for air-conditioning.
When the change in temperature due to moss planting was investigated, on rooftops with no moss, the surface temperature reached over 60 degrees centigrade in midsummer. But roofs with moss stayed at about 40 degrees, virtually the same as the air around them.
As a way to combat the heat island effect, Valore has developed a practical technique for growing this lightweight, energy-saving, maintenance-free sand moss quickly, using advanced biotechnology.
COOL MOSS can “green up” not just rooftops and wall surfaces, but all sorts of spaces. It can also be grown on curved surfaces, so it’s recently been used for art projects and movie characters too.
