WILLCOM CORE XGP is a new, high-speed, mobile data service from WILLCOM. It uses XGP, which stands for eXtended Global Platform. XGP has been recommended as an international standard by the International Telecommunications Union.
XGP is also called “next-generation PHS.” A trial service is available in a limited area, as a prelude to service provision from fall 2009.
WILLCOM CORE XGP is supported by WILLCOM’s microcell network, which the company has developed over more than a decade in the PHS business. Microcell networks, where areas are covered using lots of cell stations, have high spectrum efficiency per unit area. This feature means that the effective speed is unlikely to decrease even if access is concentrated.
The basic technology for WILLCOM CORE is still in the process of development. In particular, the emphasis is not on catalog speed, but on the speed actually experienced by users. In the future, WILLCOM aims for the service to be usable even when traveling at up to 300 km/h, and to achieve a theoretical speed of 100 Mbps for both sending and receiving.
