Automatic diagnosis system for malignant melanoma using the Internet

-
Professor Yatomi in the Department of Applied Informatics at Hosei University has developed technology for automatically detecting the type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. At Innovation Japan 2009, he exhibited a system for diagnosing photos of suspicious skin tissue via the Internet. Even for experienced dermatologists, it is difficult to distinguish malignant melanomas from benign ones. This system converts the characteristics of tumors into parameters, and distinguishes between benign and malignant melanomas using threshold values. It has been proven to have high diagnostic accuracy of around 85%. From now on, Professor Yatomi will enhance this system, so it can be used by less experienced dermatologists and by physicians in other fields.
