Frequency and Volume, on public display at the NTT Intercommunication Center, is a media artwork that lets people experience radio waves, which can’t usually be felt, as if touching them directly.
When you enter the exhibit space, first of all, your shadow appears on a large screen.
You can tune the frequency by moving your shadow left and right, and control the volume by moving backwards and forwards, to make your shadow change size.
Signals received by 12 AM/FM radios and an outdoor TV antenna produce all sorts of dissonant sounds, including music, foreign TV broadcasts, and movie scenes, depending on how people move. This creates a space that seems mysterious to both the eye and the ear.
