A research group at AIST has developed fluorescent reagents that emit bright light stably, by incorporating semiconductor nanocrystals into tiny glass beads using the sol-gel method. These fluorescent reagents bind to biological substances and cells. This enables researchers to obtain information about the position and movement of substances and cells. It’s also thought that these materials can be used in lighting and displays. Displays using such materials are expected to provide more vivid colors than current displays, and to be more energy-efficient. Also, the brightness of these materials means that they have little energy loss. So they could also be used in high-efficiency photovoltaic cells, converting light energy into electrical energy.
