At FC EXPO 2010, Toyota exhibited the FCHV-adv, a fuel-cell vehicle with the Toyota FC Stack high-performance fuel cell.
To enable fuel-cell vehicles to become widespread, Toyota has been working to resolve issues regarding their performance, compactness, durability, and low-temperature start-up. The aim is for fuel-cell vehicles to be in widespread use by 2015.
The FCHV-adv has four 70 Mpa high-pressure hydrogen tanks, developed by Toyota. It can go 830 km continuously on one hydrogen fill-up. It’s also been confirmed that this vehicle can start and run even if the temperature is minus 30 degrees C.
The motor delivers a maximum output of 90 kW and torque of 260 Nm. During deceleration, it functions as a regenerative power source.
For safety, proximity sensors are installed on the front, rear, and sides of the vehicle. The instant a collision is sensed, the hydrogen tank valves are closed to prevent leakage. The tanks have also been confirmed not to rupture even under a severe impact from behind.
