Full resolution Super High-Definition Camera System

-

The NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories are working on a full-resolution Super Hi-Vision camera system which can record, transmit, and display 8k video.

The system consists of the camera, a camera control unit, and a display.

The camera which weighs 65kg, uses three 33 megapixel image sensors to record the image, and a built-in compact transmitter then transmits a 90 Gbps signal on a single optical cable to the camera control unit.

The camera control unit receives the signal from the camera and processes it to remove lateral chromatic aberration which occurs when different wavelengths of light have different focal lengths, this allows the system to deliver a crisp clear image at such a high resolution.

The control unit also generates a signal which is delivered to the camera viewfinder to help the camera operator find the in-focus range and adjust the focus.

The signal is then sent via four optical multi-cables to four tiled 2k displays, which then outputs the video at the full resolution of 7680x4320 pixels.

The NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories will continue to develop prototypes with the goal of delivering a system with color reproduction and a dynamic range superior to that of HDTV.
