At Digital Signage Japan 2010, Sharp exhibited a multi-screen display system with the world's thinnest bezel, for release in August.
This system utilizes Sharp's new 60V LCD display, the PN-V601. The display uses Sharp's proprietary LCD technology to significantly reduce the width of the monitor's bezel, making the seams where individual LCD monitors join only 6.5mm wide.
The resolution of each screen is 1,366 x 768 dots. Here, there are 30 monitors on the wall and 24 on the floor.
"We are exhibiting a concept multi-screen wall display. Based on actual business discussions so far, we expect the most common size will be four, or nine or 18 screens. The main places these displays will be used are at stations and airports. Of course, they're much brighter than ordinary large-format displays, putting out over 700 candelas. So there's no need for the room to be dark. We think that being able to use a big display in a bright room will enable us to suggest new ways of utilizing these products."
This system features a full-array LED backlight. Arranging the LED elements uniformly makes the brightness more even over the entire display area, which is important in multi-screen systems.
"This system has three components overall. One is video equipment for NHK Super Hi-Vision. There's one player per monitor, and all 54 are managed synchronously. The second component uses several multi-output PCs to enable Super Hi-Vision pictures to be shown on the walls and floor. The third component controls the signals input to the Multi Image Display Processor, so content can be shown in enlarged form on the 54 displays. These three components make it possible to show videos and photos, PowerPoint slides, or PC applications on the whole display."
From now on, Sharp will consider improving the resolution further, and enabling the system to be used outdoors.
