At Interop 2010, NEC exhibited the Life Touch, a prototype Android cloud device currently under development.
The aim of the Life Touch is to provide an optimal user interface for customer services by businesses.
"The Life Touch isn't targeted at advanced users; instead, it's intended to be a universal device that anyone can use."
"The basic feature of the Life Touch is that its screen is four times bigger than a mobile phone screen, making it very easy to use. Another major feature is that we've been able to freely develop this Android-based user interface, so the icons can be very large and easy to see."
The Life Touch won't be provided directly to end users by NEC; instead, the idea is that businesses offering consumer services will customize the Life Touch and provide it to their customers. At this year's Interop, NEC presented solutions for e-books, home services, and life care.
"Let me show you e-book services. When you click this icon, six e-book services appear. If you choose My Bookshelf, the books you own appear. You can view book titles like this. So let's look at comic books. This is a color comic, and you can see it in very good color on the LCD screen. If you want to enlarge the picture, you can do that by tapping the screen twice."
The Life Touch runs the Android 2.1 OS, and features wireless LAN, Bluetooth, a 3-megapixel camera, USB, and a full-size SDHC card slot. It can also be customized to support 3G, infrared data transmission, and changes in the button design.
