Panasonic Twin-lens 3D HD Video Camera - AG-3DA1

-
At the 3D & Virtual Reality Expo, Panasonic presented the AG-3DA1 which is the world's first integrated twin-lens Full HD 3D video camera, for release in August.

Despite being a twin-lens 3D camera, this product is very mobile, as its body weighs less than 2.8 kg.

"Firstly, as you can see, this is a twin-lens camera. The lenses are 6 cm apart, so it can take pictures with the same parallax as a person's eyes. You can adjust the convergence point easily using this dial."

The convergence point is where the optical axes of the left and right lenses converge. The ability to adjust it is necessary to create various kinds of 3D images. Just as a person's eyes vary their convergence point depending on what they're looking at, to take natural 3D pictures, it's necessary to adjust the camera in accordance with the subject.

"The camera has two card slots here. The SD memory cards on the right and left record pictures for the right and left eyes."

"Of course, the two pictures are recorded in such a way that you can immediately see that the video is 3D. The two pictures are linked by metadata, so they're synchronized properly when played."

The recording format is PH mode, for AVCHD professional quality. As well as an output jack for HD-SDI2, there's one for HDMI 1.4a, so you can connect the video camera directly to a 3D TV.

"We've already had inquiries concerning 3,000 units from 2,000 companies worldwide. We've also received firm orders for 300 units worldwide, and we'd like to increase that figure substantially. This camcorder is priced at 2,100,000 yen, which is a bit high for a consumer product, but for a professional 3D camera, the price is very low."
