Mazda has completely redesigned the Premacy, its seven-person minivan. The new model was released on July 1.
The development concept for the new Premacy was "Contemporary smart choice." This van has dual sliding doors, and a flexible interior where the seats can be arranged in a variety of ways. It's been developed as a new family car that gives a sporty ride and excellent fuel economy.
The van's exterior has a functional, innovative design with flowing curves, which Mazda calls "Nagare," meaning "flow." Unlike conventional boxlike minivans, the Premacy makes a vibrant, stylish impression.
"The body overall can be likened to water, which can flow in a variety of ways."
"There are three ideas behind this van. The first is, it's compact. We wanted to make an automobile that's impressive enough to turn people's heads. The second idea is innovation. Minivans tend to have a flat design, but we wanted to give this one an individualistic body design. The third idea is harmony. The Premacy has this flowing form, called Nagare, as a natural motif. It doesn't just look good; it also makes the van more aerodynamic. We wanted to make an automobile that harmonizes form and function."
The interior, which holds up to seven people, is wide enough for comfort. But the Premacy is also easy to handle, with a turning radius of 5.3 m. The interior also expresses the concept of "flow," from the instrument panel to the seat stitching.
"Drivers want a sporty ride, so in our concept, we put the driver first, and designed the overall vehicle accordingly. So we took special care to make sure that the passenger seat and second seat are comfortable."
The new Premacy model features Mazda's unique idling stop technology, called i-stop. This helps drivers care for the environment without any conscious effort, as it stops and starts the engine automatically when needed.
The new Premacy is priced at 1,799,000 yen, or US$19,000, and Mazda plans to sell 1,800 a month in Japan.
