Sony has announced the release of three new compact point and shoot camera models, the DSC-WX5, DSC-TX9, and DSC-T99. The DSC-WX5 and DSC-TX9 feature a 12.2 MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, and are also the worlds smallest 3D cameras, able to capture a 3D still image with a single lens.
"The main features of this product are the back-illuminated CMOS sensor which allows it to take clear pictures in low-lighting as well as the ability to record full HD video."
"Previous models have featured a swing panorama mode, and with this camera we have further evolved the panorama feature. With this camera you swing it across once and you can easily take a still 3D picture."
As well as a still 3D picture viewable on a 3D display or TV, the camera also features a Sweep Multi Angle mode, which uses a similar process to create a simulated 3D image on the cameras 2D LCD screen.
"This mode is called swing multi-angle. Once you are in this mode, you just swing the camera like you would with the previous version... it is now processing the 3D image. In this mode, by tilting the camera, the perspective changes and it seems as though you are looking at a 3D image even though it is actually only a 2D display."
The cameras also feature a Superior Auto mode, which can take multiple shots of the same scene to reduce image noise and extend the dynamic range. The camera automatically recognizes which setting to use and combines up to six shots to produce a higher quality image.
Another feature is the Background Defocus mode which takes two shots, identifies the photos background, and then softens it to create images similar to those produced by a DSLR.
Sony also released the DSC-T99 and 99D.
"These are the CCD models, and the T99, T99D models are going on sale. It has a 14 megapixel CCD sensor, and is thin with a touch panel, which allows the user to easily take pictures. In addition, the T99D model features different design variations, specifically, 2 types which come in gold and brown, and features a more advanced design then the conventional models."
All models are due to come out in Japan in August, with prices ranging from ¥27,000 for the T99 to ¥45,000 for the TX9.
