KDDI R&D Labs is developing technology for building personal networks with mobile phones as the key, enabling friends to enjoy a variety of services and applications.
"The sort of network we're talking about is a restricted group of users, such as friends only or family members only, who want to share videos, photos, and other content. Our aim is to utilize mobile phones to enable people to restrict users and devices more securely and easily."
For example, if Alice wants to share her holiday video with her friend Bob only, she can send key data, which restricts users and devices, to Bob, and check his ID via mobile phone.
"As you can see here, Alice has sent a QR code to Bob's notebook PC. This QR code contains the information that Alice is currently providing a video, and information about the providing device and Alice, the providing user. Bob's mobile phone reads the QR code, and obtains the service information. Next, Bob specifies the device he'll use to watch the video. Then, key data is exchanged between Bob's phone and Alice's phone, and the key data is forwarded to Bob's device. The device that receives the key data requests the video from Alice's device, and if it has the correct key, Bob can watch the video."
"In social networking services, communities are formed within specific Web servers. But this technology extends that approach to all devices connected to the Internet. The idea is to create a virtual space among a set of devices used only by friends or only by family members."
The starting date for this kind of service hasn't been decided. But the aim is to make it practical within two or three years.
