Fujitsu - Wraparound 3D monitor system

-
At Wireless Japan 2010, Fujitsu presented a "wrap-around 3D monitor system."

This technology uses pictures from four cameras attached to a car, projecting them onto a 3D curved surface. It can show all directions from a freely chosen viewpoint around the car.

"Previously, the four camera pictures were processed in 2D, but now, they're processed in 3D. This has enabled us to obtain a new capability with the same cameras."

Until now, the pictures were converted to a flat image, so the image was simply four different perspectives. But with this system, it's possible to generate a 3D overview that includes the surroundings. And the viewpoint can be changed as well.

To enable a smooth change in line of sight when the pictures are switched, viewpoint interpolation technology is used. This continuously generates pictures with the viewpoint, line of sight, and field of view interpolated between before and after switching. This technology enables drivers to instantly understand which location they're looking at, and from where, so they can do safety checks.

"For example, if you're turning left, you can get a better view of a place on your left side that was hard to see. Or if you're reversing, you can see behind you more easily. In other words, the point you want to see depends on how you're driving. With this system, you can see what you need to see properly."

This system was achieved by combining various Fujitsu technologies. These include image processing technology from Fujitsu Laboratories, automotive image processing chip technology from Fujitsu Semiconductor, and automotive Human Machine Interface Technology from Fujitsu Ten.

This system is already available as a dealer option in Japan for three Toyota models: the Prius, Alphard, and Vellfire.
