Multi-viewpoint 3D display for mobile phones

-
At Wireless Japan 2010, NTT DoCoMo exhibited, for reference, a "mobile, multi-viewpoint, naked-eye 3D display".

This display uses a reticular lens to create a 3D effect when the left and right eyes see pictures from eight viewpoints. A feature of this system is that no 3D glasses are needed, and it enables viewing of natural 3D images over a wide range.

This multi-viewpoint 3D display gives a very realistic impression, as if objects are actually there.

"For this demo, we've produced CG content from eight viewpoints. We're using pictures of insects, and customers can change their viewpoint freely, to enjoy the pictures in 3D."

"Regarding 3D mobile phones, of course, I think there'll be a need to look at 3D pictures on mobile phones. And because the screen is small, we'd like to create the impression that there actually is an object present. For example, catalogs on mobile shopping sites can show the actual merchandise in 3D, and make it look just like the real thing. In the case of food, it would be good to deliver pictures that are so realistic, they make your mouth water."

This display is currently under development. The schedule for commercial release hasn't been decided yet.
